Lawmakers seek probe into ex-DPWH undersecretary's death, suicide ruled out

Lawmakers are calling for an investigation into the death of former DPWH Undersecretary Catalina Cabral, who died after an alleged fall from a cliff along Kennon Road.

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla stated that initial autopsy findings point to suicide, but the government is also investigating the possibility of foul play to address suspicions of a conspiracy to silence her.

Cabral, a key figure in the investigation of anomalous flood control projects, had resigned in September amid congressional inquiries.

She had reportedly contacted the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee expressing willingness to cooperate with the probe into the flood control scam.

The Ombudsman had offered Cabral personal safety prior to her demise, and she was willing to cooperate when questioned on December 3.

Remulla sacked the police chiefs of Tuba and Benguet for mishandling the incident, including the premature release of Cabral's cell phone to her relatives.

Cabral's death should not halt the prosecution of those liable for the flood control issues, with lawmakers urging further investigation into her staff and other DPWH officials.
