Lacson proposes AFP escorts to end Maguindanao election violence

Senator Panfilo "Ping" Lacson has proposed replacing private armed group security escorts of candidates in Maguindanao with Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) personnel to curb election violence.

This suggestion comes in response to the recent assassination attempt on Datu Piang, Maguindanao del Sur Vice Mayor Mohammad Omar Samama, who survived and is in stable condition.

Lacson believes that AFP personnel from the same regional battalion or division securing both opposing camps will prevent clashes and reduce tensions.

He noted that at least six councilor candidates and their supporters have been killed in politically motivated incidents in Maguindanao, which was recently divided into two provinces.

Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairperson George Garcia confirmed an increase in election-related attacks in Maguindanao and Cotabato City.
