Groups ask CA to void Meralco-EERI power deal

Multisectoral groups have asked the Court of Appeals to nullify the Energy Regulatory Commission's (ERC) approval of a 1,200-megawatt power supply agreement between Meralco and Excellent Energy Resources, Inc. (EERI).

The petitioners argue that the ERC acted with grave abuse of discretion, allowing EERI to allegedly collect P932 million for its connection assets twice.

This double charging would occur once from Meralco's consumers and again from the National Grid Corporation (NGCP), which would then pass the cost to all grid consumers.

Convenor of the Power for People Coalition Gerry Arances stated that the ERC is enabling power companies to overcharge consumers.

The groups are urging the appellate court to annul and set aside the ERC's decision from December 10, 2024, that granted final authority to the Meralco-EERI agreement.
