Konektadong Pinoy law to improve PH internet access

The recently enacted "Konektadong Pinoy" law, also known as the Open Access in Data Transmission Act, aims to improve internet accessibility and affordability in the Philippines.

This new law permits new internet service providers to operate without needing a legislative franchise, encouraging infrastructure sharing and allowing smaller players to enter the industry.

Senator Francis Escudero stated that the law is a significant advancement in providing low-cost and dependable internet access, particularly to remote and underserved areas.

The "Konektadong Pinoy" Act seeks to address the Philippines' high internet costs relative to speed by democratizing access to information and markets for all Filipinos.

Senator Imee Marcos, the principal author of the measure, expressed that the new law would end the long-standing woes of slow and costly internet.

The Department of Economy, Planning, and Development (DEPDev) stated that the Konektadong Pinoy Act will help bridge the digital divide and advance digital transformation under the Philippine Development Plan (PDP) 2023-2028.

DEPDev Secretary Arsenio Balisacan highlighted that reliable and affordable internet will enable students to access online learning, MSMEs to reach broader markets, and citizens to access government services more easily.

The reforms brought by the law are expected to deliver wider coverage, faster speeds, and more affordable internet, making digitalization a stronger engine of productivity and inclusive growth.

Stronger digital infrastructure also enhances resilience during disasters by keeping essential services connected.
