Kanlaon volcano spews ash twice on Monday

Kanlaon Volcano experienced two ash emissions on Monday morning, producing grayish plumes that rose 300 meters and drifted northwest.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported the ash emissions occurred between 9:01 a.m. to 9:29 a.m. and 10:29 a.m. to 11:07 a.m.

In the afternoon, another ash emission was logged starting at 4:05 p.m. and lasting for nearly two hours, with the plume rising 900 meters and dispersing northwest.

Thin ash may have affected communities in La Carlota and Bago cities, as well as Murcia, Negros Occidental.

Monitoring on Sunday revealed one volcanic earthquake and the release of 2,578 tons of sulfur dioxide.

Alert level 2, indicating increased unrest, is still in effect for Kanlaon Volcano.

Entry into the four-kilometer permanent danger zone and flying aircraft near the volcano remain prohibited.

Phivolcs warned nearby residents about potential hazards like sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions and precursory magmatic activity.
