Japan provides USD5M to boost climate resilience in BARMM

The Japanese government is providing approximately USD5 million (PHP290 million) to enhance the climate resilience of livelihoods in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

This three-year project, implemented by the World Food Programme (WFP) Philippines, will benefit around 36,000 decommissioned combatants and vulnerable communities.

The initiative aims to strengthen local government units' disaster management capacity, enhance farmers' livelihoods, install early warning systems for extreme weather events, establish disaster risk management plans, and maintain irrigation systems.

The project will also support the transformation of Moro Islamic Liberation Front camps under the Camp Transformation Program.

Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Endo Kazuya emphasized Tokyo's commitment to development in the Bangsamoro, recognizing the significance of peace in Mindanao for the entire Asian region.

WFP Philippines country director Regis Chapman expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with national and BARMM governments to ensure the project's effective implementation with Japan's continued support.
