Iran edges Alas Pilipinas in five sets to reach FIVB Worlds Round of 16

Iran defeated Alas Pilipinas in a thrilling five-set match, 21-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-23, 22-20, to secure a spot in the Round of 16 of the 2025 FIVB Men's Volleyball World Championship.

The Philippines appeared to have secured the victory in the fifth set with a 20-18 lead and saved six match points, but Iran rallied to win the crucial final points.

Middle blocker Kazemi Yousef gave Iran its first match point advantage, but Bryan Bagunas knotted it again at 20 before Iran ultimately sealed the win.

The world No. 15 Iranians silenced the Filipino spikers, leaving their legions of fans stunned with the come-from-behind win.

Iran's victory, alongside Tunisia's earlier win over Egypt, placed them as the top two teams in Group A with Iran finishing second.

Tunisia defeated Egypt in straight sets, 25-19, 25-18, 25-22, to also advance in the tournament.

Alas, ranked No. 77, finished its maiden run on the world stage with a 1-2 card after shocking African powerhouse Egypt in four sets earlier.

Iran will now proceed to face the top seed of Group H in the next round.
