An infectious diseases expert, Dr. Rontgene Solante, stated that the recent increase in leptospirosis cases in the country is not expected to escalate into a public health emergency.
Dr. Solante mentioned that the current number of daily admissions for leptospirosis is typical, around 25 to 28 patients, and the surge has likely peaked.
He cited the 400 to 500 cases during Ondoy as an example of a previous surge that did not become a public health emergency.
The Department of Health (DOH) spokesperson, Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo, identified East Avenue Medical Center as having the highest number of admitted leptospirosis patients among DOH hospitals.
Other DOH hospitals with significant leptospirosis admissions include San Lazaro Hospital, National Kidney and Transplant Institute, and Sta. Ana Hospital, among others.
Dr. Solante emphasized the need to boost hospital capabilities, especially in remote areas, as delayed hospital visits and lack of facilities contribute to mortality.
Mortality rates for leptospirosis have remained stable in recent years, averaging between 13% and 17%.
