Lawmakers probe alleged abuse of special resident visas

Four lawmakers have filed House Resolution 1771 seeking an inquiry into the alleged abuse of special resident visas and delayed birth registration procedures.

The resolution, filed by Representatives Erwin Tulfo, Ralph Tulfo, Edvic Yap, and Eric Yap, aims to determine if current policies align with national interest and security.

Representative Erwin Tulfo expressed concern that the influx of Chinese nationals on various visas could pose a security risk.

Data from the Bureau of Immigration indicates that out of approximately 78,000 foreigners granted retiree visas, over 30,000 are Chinese nationals.

Some Chinese nationals holding retiree visas are reportedly between 35 to 50 years old, below the typical retirement age.

Concerns have also been raised about Chinese nationals obtaining investor's visas without making significant investments and some even working for Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) while holding these visas.
