DOH pushes ban on swimming in flood waters

Health Secretary Ted Herbosa is pushing for a ban on swimming and playing in flood waters, especially for children, and plans to recommend to local government units (LGUs) the creation of ordinances to enforce this prohibition.

San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora, who also heads the Metro Manila Council (MMC), will be introducing a resolution to the MMC urging LGUs to ban residents from swimming in flood waters and impose sanctions on violators.

This initiative aims to mitigate the rising leptospirosis cases in Metro Manila following Typhoon Carina and the Southwest Monsoon.

The Department of Health (DOH) logged 255 new leptospirosis cases from July 21 to August 3, a 17% increase from the 217 cases recorded from July 7-20.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection transmitted by infected rodents, whose urine can mix with floodwaters and enter the body.

Herbosa also wants to suggest to the Department of Education to remind students not to play in floodwater.
