Govt allots P5.09 billion for COVID-19 health response

The Philippine government is allocating P5.09 billion for an emergency response project aimed at bolstering the country's healthcare system against the COVID-19 pandemic.

This initiative, proposed by the Department of Health (DOH) and approved by the National Economic and Development Authority-Investment Coordination Committee, includes establishing testing and quarantine centers in six major airports.

The project also involves setting up 21 first-line decontamination facilities, refurbishing and establishing negative pressure isolation rooms in numerous hospitals, and installing 450 isolation tents.

Furthermore, the DOH's emergency response plan includes procuring personal protective equipment (PPE) sets, COVID-19 test kits, diagnostic and life support equipment like ventilators, and ambulances.

To support health workers, the government is ensuring the provision of medical supplies and equipment, offering incentives to manufacturers of critical medical products, and directing local government units to provide temporary shelter for frontliners.

The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) has also enhanced insurance coverage for frontliners through its 'Bayanihan Frontliners Fund', increasing life insurance to P500,000 at no cost to the insured.
