Gilas Pilipinas women's basketball team makes it to 2026 Asia Cup Qualifiers

The Philippine women's basketball team, Gilas, secured a spot in the 2026 Women's Asia Cup Qualifiers after a 73-70 victory against Lebanon.

This win also ensures Gilas remains in Division A for the 2027 Women's Asia Cup to be hosted by the Philippines.

Naomi Panganiban was the game's hero, scoring a team-high 15 points, including crucial free throws in the final seconds to secure the win.

Jack Animam had a double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds, while Sumayah Sugapong and Vanessa de Jesus each added 14 and 13 points respectively.

Gilas averted a 17-point collapse and showed composure in the end game, preventing Lebanon from attempting a game-tying three-pointer.

The team's victory also qualifies them for the play-in round on Friday, keeping their hopes of advancing to the semifinals alive.

Head coach Patrick Aquino expressed pride in the team's effort and the support from the federation and women's basketball community.

Gilas previously almost upset Japan, coming back from a 22-point deficit in the fourth quarter before falling short 82-85.
