Garcia assumes Cebu City mayor post after Rama's dismissal

Cebu City Vice Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia officially took his oath as the new mayor on October 9, 2024, to serve the remainder of Mayor Michael Rama's term until June 30, 2025.

Garcia assumed the mayoral position following the dismissal of Mayor Michael Rama from public service by the Office of the Ombudsman.

The Ombudsman found Rama guilty of nepotism and grave misconduct for unlawfully appointing two of his brothers-in-law, resulting in his dismissal, forfeiture of retirement benefits, and perpetual disqualification from government service.

Rama was also previously suspended for six months, along with seven other city officials, due to issues involving unpaid salaries and discrimination against four employees.

Department of Interior and Local Government-Central Visayas Director Leocadio Trovela administered Garcia's oath of office.

Upon assuming his role, Garcia announced the discontinuation of Rama's 'Singapore-like' vision for Cebu City.
