Filipino priest bags Ramon Magsaysay Award for helping homeless

Catholic priest Flaviano Villanueva is among the three 2025 Ramon Magsaysay Awardees for his work in restoring dignity to thousands of poor and homeless in Metro Manila.

He founded the Arnold Janssen Kalinga Center (AJKC) in 2015, an institution that provides dignified care and service to the homeless and marginalized in Manila.

During the bloody crackdown on illegal drugs launched by Rodrigo Duterte, the center gave solace to the widows and families of victims of extrajudicial killings (EJK).

Villanueva dedicated the recognition to thousands of homeless people and EJK victims.

He previously faced sedition charges in 2019 and received the Human Rights Tulip Award from the Netherlands in 2021.

Villanueva is the 14th Catholic priest to receive Asia's "premier prize and highest honor" since its establishment in 1958.
