Filipino fishermen fishing unhampered in WPS amid China ban

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) stated that Filipino fishermen are continuing to fish unhampered in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) despite China's unilateral fishing ban.

BFAR spokesperson Nazario Briguera confirmed that the agency has not received any reports of Filipino fishers being blocked by Chinese vessels.

He reiterated that the Philippines does not recognize China's fishing ban in the area due to a lack of legal basis.

Briguera assured that a whole-of-government approach will be taken if China proceeds with its warning to detain "trespassers" starting June 15.

He warned that such an action by China would constitute another violation of Philippine rights and sovereignty in the WPS.
