Filipino chess prodigy Arca takes lead in ASEAN championships

Filipino chess prodigy Christian Gian Karlo Arca has taken the lead in the 6th ASEAN Individual Chess Championships-Gov. Henry Oaminal Cup.

The 16-year-old IM secured the top spot after defeating fellow Filipino Tyrhone James Tabernilla in a hard-fought match.

Arca's strategic pawn sacrifice in the game almost led to his defeat, but his opponent's mistake allowed him to gain an advantage.

He is set to face a challenging opponent, India's third seed IM V S Raahul, in the next round.

A victory in this tournament could potentially crown Arca as the Philippines' newest Grandmaster before the year ends.

Arca, who became an International Master in August, is sharing the lead with IM Raahul and Mongolia's IM Munkhdalai Amilal, all with 2.5 points.
