Cardinal Tagle chosen to assist in papal conclave preparations

Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle has been chosen by lottery for a rotating post to assist the Camerlengo, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, in preparations for the papal conclave.

He joins Cardinals Dominique Mamberti and Reinhard Marx in the 'Particular Congregation,' the composition of which was renewed during the fifth pre-conclave meeting of cardinals known as the 'General Congregation'.

The three cardinals will assist the Camerlengo in preparing for the conclave to elect Pope Francis' successor, which is set to begin on May 7.

Marx will serve as the coordinator of the Council for the Economy, while Mamberti will be tasked with announcing the new pope from the central loggia of St. Peter's Basilica.

Over 180 cardinals gathered for the general congregation, where they discussed the Church, its relationship with the world, emerging challenges, and the qualities of the next pope.

The apostolic constitution Universi Dominici Gregis governs the procedures for papal elections.
