El Nido's rehab efforts progress with new septic tanks and landfill

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) announced that environmental rehabilitation efforts in El Nido, Palawan, are progressing as planned, adhering to recommendations from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

The DILG had directed local government units in several tourist destinations, including El Nido and Coron, to submit six-month rehabilitation plans focusing on waste management, tourism development, and addressing security and health concerns.

El Nido has made advancements in water infrastructure and solid waste management, highlighted by the completion of nine communal septic tanks and the establishment of a sanitary landfill in Barangay New Ibajay.

Four hundred forty-four out of 894 commercial establishments in El Nido have been connected to the local sewage treatment plant, with 91 more pending connection.

Additionally, the DILG issued 97 notices of violations for businesses that failed to comply with regular water quality testing.

The LGU has also issued more than 560 Notices of Violation for improper waste disposal.

Nine communal septic tanks have been constructed to support 148 toilets, 143 floor drains, and 142 lavatories, complemented by five out of six targeted Anaerobic Baffled Reactor (ABR) tanks near esteros.

Ordinance No. 15, s. 2024, was enacted to regulate marine vessel waste disposal.
