DOTr to privatize LRT-2, MRT-3 by 2025

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is proceeding with plans to privatize the operations and maintenance of the LRT-2 and MRT-3 by 2025.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. has approved the public-private partnership (PPP) mode of privatization for LRT-2.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon stated that privatization is the long-term solution to recurring system issues, as government operations are constrained by budget and procurement rules, hindering quick repairs.

The International Finance Corporation is assisting the government in the PPP process for LRT-2, while the Asian Development Bank is involved with the MRT-3.

The bidding process for LRT-2 is expected to begin soon.

Dizon assured the public that privatization does not automatically mean fare hikes, as the government will continue to regulate fares for both train lines.
