The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has commenced demolition and fencing activities at the Metrowalk property in Pasig City for the Ortigas Station of the Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP).
This action follows a directive from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to accelerate the project, which had been delayed for nearly three years due to right-of-way acquisition issues.
Acting Transport chief Giovanni Lopez announced the start of these works, crucial for the construction of the Ortigas Station.
The DOTr has successfully acquired 82 percent of the required right-of-way and aims to reach 95 percent completion by December.
Lopez emphasized the DOTr's commitment to expediting the remaining right-of-way acquisitions to ensure uninterrupted construction.
The 33-kilometer MMSP will feature 17 stations, connecting Valenzuela City to Parañaque City, with a spur line to NAIA Terminal 3.
Upon completion in 2032, the subway is projected to reduce travel time between Valenzuela and Pasay from approximately 1 hour and 38 minutes to just 45 minutes, serving an estimated 519,000 daily passengers.
Transportation Assistant Secretary IC Calaguas led the demolition, accompanied by representatives of the Singson family, owners of Metrowalk's management company.
