DOTr, MIAA propose PPP to upgrade NAIA

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) have submitted a joint proposal for a Public Private Partnership (PPP) to upgrade the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista confirmed the proposal was submitted to the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) on Saturday, June 3, for approval, as all major project proposals require NEDA's sign-off.

This proposal aims to enhance NAIA's capacity, ensure safe operations, and significantly improve the passenger experience through shorter waiting times, modern facilities, and better terminal connectivity.

The government is seeking a private concessionaire to invest in crucial areas such as modern air traffic control equipment, runway rehabilitation, and the improvement of existing terminal infrastructure.

The private partner will operate the airport for 15 years to recover their investment, a period intended to ensure sufficient capacity while other regional airport projects are still in development.
