DOTr launches cashless payment system for MRT-3

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has launched a new cashless payment system for the MRT-3, allowing commuters to use contactless payment methods for fares starting Friday, July 25.

Passengers can tap contactless turnstiles using Mastercard and Visa credit, debit, and prepaid cards with EMV chips, compatible e-wallets on NFC-enabled Android smartphones, or GCash Commuter QR codes.

The new system, which also works with compatible e-wallets on NFC-enabled Android smartphones, eliminates the need for cash or stored-value cards.

Secretary Dizon assured that there will be no additional fare with the cashless system, as the deducted amount will be the same as purchasing a single journey ticket.

This system, a global first, enables multiple payment modes and is expected to reduce queues, speed up boarding, and support the government's shift to digitally enabled mobility.

The system also enhances commuter security with Mastercard's built-in fraud protection technology.

Currently, each MRT station has one turnstile equipped with this automatic fare collection system (AFCS), with plans to upgrade all turnstiles in MRT-3, LRT-1, and LRT-2, and potentially extend to busways and public utility vehicles.

Commuters with older cards without EMV chips may need to replace them for the system to work.
