Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco led the groundbreaking ceremony for a P10-million tourist rest area (TRA) in Tubungan, Iloilo, on August 23.
This facility, the first of its kind in the Western Visayas region, is located in Barangay Igpaho beside a viewing deck overlooking mountains.
The TRA aims to cater to travelers exploring the mountainous areas of Tubungan and nearby towns in Iloilo and Antique province.
It will feature amenities such as restrooms, shower areas, and a souvenir shop, serving visitors engaged in activities like biking, camping, and trekking.
Funded by the Department of Tourism (DOT) through the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), the project is a collaboration with the local government unit of Tubungan.
Mayor Roquito G. Tacsagon highlighted that the TRA enhances Tubungan's potential as an emerging tourist destination.
