DOST pushes for punctuality amid National Time Consciousness Week

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is urging Filipinos to be more disciplined and punctual in observance of National Time Consciousness Week.

Under the theme "Oras Pinas: Filipino, On Time Ka!," the campaign, also involving the Science and Technology Information Institute (STII) and the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), aims to establish the Philippine Standard Time (PhST) as the norm.

The initiative seeks to eradicate the negative perception of "Filipino time" and foster a culture of discipline and respect for others' schedules.

DOST highlighted that tardiness negatively impacts the nation's economic productivity, noting a Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) report indicating that Metro Manila's traffic congestion causes the Philippines to lose PHP 3.5 billion daily.

Being punctual, according to DOST, signifies respect for fellow Filipinos and contributes to economic growth.

Historian Xiao Chua explained that the historical roots of "Filipino time" trace back to the Spanish colonial era, when high-ranking officials intentionally arrived late to assert their social status.
