DOST launches PH's first locally-made battery-electric ferry

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has launched the M/B Dalaray, the country's first locally developed battery-electric passenger ferry.

The ferry is designed to operate on routes connecting Manila, Makati, Mandaluyong, Pasig, and Taguig, and will also serve areas around Laguna Lake, including Rizal and Laguna.

M/B Dalaray, meaning "flow of current", is powered by lithium-ion batteries that can be fully charged in two to three hours, providing a range of approximately 45 kilometers.

It is equipped with a hybrid solar inverter system for onboard facilities and will be powered by solar-charged stations.

DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. stated that the initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion in Metro Manila and combat climate change by eliminating fossil fuel consumption.

The project received P30 million in funding for Phase 1 and over P54 million for its entirety.

The M/B Dalaray is set to become operational for free in November, ahead of the Christmas rush.
