DOLE expands P20/kilo rice program to Subic workers

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has expanded its "Benteng Bigas Meron (BBM) na" program to offer rice at P20 per kilo to qualified workers in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone.

The initiative, a collaboration between DOLE and the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA), aims to provide affordable rice to the Subic Bay Freeport workforce.

Approximately 300 workers from Cresc Inc., a manufacturing company, were the latest beneficiaries, each receiving a maximum monthly allocation of 10 kilos of rice.

SBMA Chairman and Administrator Eduardo Jose L. Aliño highlighted the program's importance in supporting minimum wage earners, calling them the "bloodline of our economy".

Cresc Inc. President Kazutomo Murata noted the program's unique benefit for workers in the Philippines, stating, "We don't have this in Japan."

Atty. Melvin Varias, SBMA Labor Department manager, confirmed that workers will pay for the rice through salary deduction, as arranged with Cresc management.
