DOH welcomes probe into alleged MAIP mismanagement

The Department of Health (DOH) welcomes Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong's interest in probing alleged mismanagement of the Medical Assistance for Indigents and Financially Incapacitated Patients (MAIP) program.

DOH Spokesperson Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo stated that Health Secretary Ted Herbosa has advocated for using DOH hospital Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOOE) and Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) payments as more suitable methods for covering hospital expenses.

Secretary Herbosa has formally requested a distinct budget allocation, separate from MAIP, to enable direct payments from the DOH to local government unit hospitals, bypassing political intermediaries.

This clarification comes after Mayor Magalong, a former adviser for the Independent Commission on Infrastructure, flagged Secretary Herbosa for investigation concerning the alleged mismanagement of MAIP.

Magalong indicated that the Mayors for Good Governance (M4GG) plans to investigate the DOH due to accusations of fund misuse tied to the MAIP, which was reportedly used to serve political interests during the prior elections.
