DOH vows to fight COVID-19 despite low Lancet ranking

The Department of Health (DOH) has pledged to continue its efforts in combating COVID-19 and protecting the population, despite the Philippines being ranked 66th out of 91 countries in suppressing the virus by the Lancet medical journal.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire emphasized a "whole of society and whole of nation approach" in their continuous work.

The Lancet study attributed the Philippines' low ranking partly to President Rodrigo Duterte's "medical populism."

Medical populism was defined in the study as simplifying the pandemic, downplaying its impacts, or suggesting easy solutions, while spectacularizing responses and creating divisions.

The President previously suggested using gasoline for disinfection, which the DOH dismissed as a joke.
