DOH to change COVID-19 case reporting methods

The Department of Health (DOH) will change how it reports COVID-19 cases to avoid confusion, especially after reporting a record high of 539 cases in a single day.

Health Undersecretary Dr. Maria Rosario Vergeire explained that the DOH will now separate 'fresh' or newly validated cases from 'late' cases which are from delayed reporting.

Fresh cases are defined as those with laboratory results released within the last three days.

The 539 cases reported on Thursday included 109 fresh cases, while the remaining 430 were late cases whose results were released last week but validated by the DOH on Thursday.

Vergeire also clarified that some of the 17 reported deaths occurred in March and April, not necessarily on the day of reporting.

The DOH's reporting timeline depends on how quickly hospitals and local government units submit their data for validation.
