DOH issues health plan amid Kanlaon Volcano eruption

The Department of Health (DOH) has issued a health response plan and warned of potential health hazards following the explosive eruption of Kanlaon Volcano.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) reported that ashfall affected 30 cities and towns, primarily in Negros Occidental, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Antique.

Potential health risks include respiratory illnesses from volcanic ash, eye and skin irritation, and water contamination.

Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa stated that immediate concerns are ash fall and potential lahar, especially if pyroclastic density currents encounter water.

The DOH Central Office has instructed regional offices to ensure sufficient supplies of N95 masks, eye protection, water purification tablets, medicines, hand sanitizers, and antiseptic wipes.

Affected residents are encouraged to wear N95 masks or any available masks, use eye protection, avoid contaminated water, practice frequent hand washing, and prepare food thoroughly.

The DENR's Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) Western Visayas advised concerned individuals to limit outdoor activities, especially vulnerable groups, and use long-sleeved clothing for skin protection.
