DOH in talks with China for medical expert deployment

The Department of Health (DOH) is in talks with the Chinese embassy to bring in medical experts from China to assist the Philippines in combating COVID-19.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro "Teddy Boy" Locsin Jr. had previously requested the Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines, Huang Xilian, for the deployment of Chinese doctors.

Manila's Ambassador to Beijing Jose Santiago Sta. Romana confirmed that Chinese doctors will soon be deployed to the Philippines, though final details are still being worked out.

The Chinese government will dispatch the medical expert team to the Philippines upon the request of the Philippine government, with their main task being to provide technical advice on epidemic prevention and control and share their experience in treating COVID-19 patients.

Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez welcomed the deployment, citing China's successful experience in containing the pandemic and believing their inputs can help reduce the country's case fatality rate.

As of March 31, the DOH reported 2,084 COVID cases with 88 deaths and 49 recoveries.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire stated that they will seek the Chinese medical experts' advice on controlling the spread of the disease and lowering COVID-19-related deaths.
