DOH expects surge in COVID-19 cases due to holidays, lower compliance

Department of Health (DOH) Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire noted an anticipated rise in COVID-19 cases due to holiday-related mobility and decreased compliance with public health standards.

The DOH reported 889 new infections on Wednesday, a more than 50% increase compared to Tuesday's 421 cases.

The National Capital Region's (NCR) COVID-19 positivity rate has surpassed 5% for the first time since October 24, reaching 8.4% on Wednesday, according to OCTA Research fellow Dr. Guido David.

Dr. David projects new cases in the NCR to exceed 1,000 on December 30, with nationwide projections at 1,600 to 2,000 new cases for the same day.

He also noted that the increase in positivity rate may be driven by the Omicron variant, not just holiday activities.

The DOH acknowledged that while the increase is multifactorial, decreased adherence to public health standards is an equally important factor.
