DOH confirms Brazil variant in COVID-19 case; more cases with UK, South Africa variants seen
The Department of Health (DOH) confirmed one case of the COVID-19 P.1 variant, first detected in Brazil, in a returning overseas Filipino from Western Visayas.
This confirmation comes after previous statements that only a common variant of Brazilian origin, not a variant of concern, was found.
The DOH also reported 59 new cases of the UK variant and 32 additional cases of the South Africa variant.
Additionally, 13 cases were found to have mutations of possible significance (E484K and N501Y mutations).
These new findings are from the latest batch of 752 samples sequenced by the University of the Philippines-Philippine Genome Center.
The P.1 variant was initially detected in Japan among travelers from Brazil.
