DOH reports 56 new Omicron subvariant cases

The Department of Health (DOH) reported the detection of 56 new cases of Omicron subvariants of the Covid-19 virus.

Of the 56 new cases, 28 were tagged as BA.2.3.20, 16 were classified as XBB, two cases each of BQ.1 and XBC, and eight were other omicron sublineages.

The majority of BA.2.3.20 and XBC cases were local infections.

The Philippines detected 121 new Omicron subvariant cases from 122 sequenced samples in a previous report, with 60 classified as BA.2.3.20, 30 as XBB, three new XBB.1.5 cases, eight as XBC, and 20 as other Omicron sublineages.

The World Health Organization's senior epidemiologist Maria Van Kerkhove identified XBB.1.5 as the most transmissible Omicron sub-variant detected so far due to its mutations.

The Philippines is also set to receive 1,002,000 doses of bivalent vaccines from the Covax Facility this month, designed to target Omicron and its subvariants.

The BA.5 variant remains the most dominant in the Philippines with a total of 12,721 cases.
