The Department of Health (DOH) has stated that Davao City is not an "epicenter" of COVID-19, despite a recent increase in cases.
Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire explained that the DOH discourages the use of the term "epicenter" as it can be misinterpreted as the source of infection and might downplay the severity in surrounding areas.
Vergeire clarified that these areas are not the origin of the COVID-19 virus.
The DOH's statement comes after an OCTA Research fellow noted that Davao City had a higher average number of daily new COVID-19 cases than Quezon City.
Davao City experienced a 54% increase in COVID-19 cases from May 31 to June 6, with over 400 employees from a business process outsourcing firm testing positive.
The DOH continues to monitor the situation in Davao City closely due to the rising number of infections.
