DFA: COVID-19 cases among Filipinos abroad reach 535

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported that the number of overseas Filipinos infected with COVID-19 has reached 535 as of April 6, 2020.

Ten new cases were confirmed among Filipinos abroad, comprising six deaths, three undergoing treatment, and one recovery.

These new deaths were recorded in the Americas and Europe, with the DFA noting a "sudden spike with an increasing trend" in the Americas since the start of April.

Out of the 535 confirmed cases, 344 are currently undergoing treatment, while 32 have recovered.

The DFA noted that the Philippines' Department of Health (DOH) has verified 237 of the cases.

The cases are spread across 33 countries, with the highest numbers reported in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

Many overseas Filipinos are situated in North America, particularly in New York State, making them vulnerable to the trend.

The DFA is intensifying efforts to repatriate land-based overseas Filipino workers who wish to return amid the pandemic.
