PH backs Filipino names for West Philippine Sea features

Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo has signed National Maritime Council (NMC) Resolution No. 002 (2025), endorsing Philippine names for 131 features in the Kalayaan Island Group (KIG) within the West Philippine Sea.

This resolution recommends the President issue an Executive Order to adopt these Filipino names, aiming to assert the Philippines' sovereign rights and jurisdiction over these features.

The initiative aligns with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and will further implement the 2024 Philippine Maritime Zones Act upon formal adoption by government agencies.

The KIG, internationally known as the Spratly Islands, is an area of islets, sandbars, atolls, reefs, shoals, and cays in the South China Sea.

The adoption of standard names is intended to resolve confusion caused by differing nomenclature from six coastal countries claiming parts of the South China Sea.
