DepEd to use modular learning after earthquake damages 7,500 classrooms in Cebu

The Department of Education (DepEd) will implement modular learning and establish temporary classrooms to mitigate learning disruptions in northern Cebu following a 6.9-magnitude earthquake.

The earthquake damaged over 7,500 classrooms, affecting more than 19,000 students.

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. and Education Secretary Sonny Angara visited Bogo City to assess the impact, observing that at least three buildings were declared unsafe.

As of October 1, DepEd data indicates 5,587 classrooms sustained minor damage, 803 had major damage, and 1,187 were completely destroyed.

Nearly 950 teachers and non-teaching personnel were also affected by the earthquake.

DepEd's priority is to quickly resume learning while damaged facilities are repaired or rebuilt, with Secretary Angara emphasizing the need for prompt assistance to prevent interrupted education.
