Davao region sees record COVID-19 cases, deaths

The Davao region recorded its highest single-day increase in COVID-19 cases since March, with 76 new infections reported on Thursday, August 27, 2020.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in the region has now surpassed 2,000.

Davao City accounted for the majority of the new cases with 102 reported over the last two days, bringing its total to 1,342 and making it the COVID-19 outbreak center in Mindanao.

Other provinces also reported new cases: Davao del Norte and Davao del Sur with seven each, Davao de Oro and Davao Oriental with four each, and Davao Occidental with 40 total cases.

Of the 98 new local transmissions, 14 were locally stranded individuals (LSIs) and two were returning overseas Filipinos (ROFs).

The region also recorded 28 new recoveries.

Two new deaths were reported in Davao City, increasing the region's total COVID-19 death toll to 66.

Despite the surge, Davao City will remain under modified general community quarantine (MGCQ) from September 1 to 30.
