DA to build farm-to-market roads in Mindanao with P2 billion project

The Department of Agriculture (DA) is prioritizing the construction of farm-to-market roads (FMRs) in Mindanao to develop previously underutilized agricultural lands.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel, Jr. stated that the DA will invest P2 billion in a single road in Sultan Kudarat, aiming to open up 32,000 to 35,000 hectares of new farmland.

Connectivity improvements in the Liguasan Marsh area could potentially enable the recovery of up to 300,000 hectares of land for agricultural use.

Starting next year, the DA will take over the responsibility of constructing these FMRs from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

These FMR projects will be complemented by post-harvest facilities, including cold storage units, dryers, and silos, funded by the World Bank-assisted Philippine Rural Development Project (PRDP).

The integration of these facilities aims to reduce production costs and increase farmer incomes by providing better links to ports and agri-ports.
