Galunggong price drops before expected Holy Week increase
The Department of Agriculture (DA) reported that fish prices in the Philippines are stable leading up to Holy Week.
DA spokesperson Assistant Secretary Arnel De Mesa stated that milkfish is priced at PHP240 per kilogram and tilapia at PHP160 per kilogram, with prices consistent since the previous month.
He noted a decrease in the price of mackerel scad (galunggong), which dropped from PHP300 last month to PHP240 currently, a drop of PHP60 per kilo.
De Mesa anticipates a temporary price increase for fish during the Holy Week period, lasting three to five days, due to the tradition of consuming fish on Good Friday.
Historically, retail price adjustments for fish do not exceed a 15 to 30 percent increase during this period.
The DA has assured the public of a stable fish supply throughout the anticipated high demand during Holy Week.
