DA eyes lowering imported rice price to P45/kg

The Department of Agriculture (DA) is considering lowering the maximum suggested retail price (MSRP) for imported rice to P45 per kilogram by the end of March.

This potential decrease is attributed to declining global rice prices and the strengthening of the Philippine peso against the US dollar.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. stated that the peso closed at P57.90 to the dollar on Monday, strengthening from its P57.995 finish on Friday.

The current MSRP for 5 percent broken imported rice is P49 per kilogram, which is the fourth reduction since the initial MSRP of P58 per kilogram was set on January 20.

Laurel mentioned that the DA will apply the MSRP "more selectively" since prices of imported rice were already lower than the MSRP in some provinces.

The DA declared a national rice emergency, citing an "extraordinary" spike in rice prices despite lower tariffs for imports.

The DA Secretary noted the effectiveness of the MSRP in influencing market prices, stating "Our MSRP is really working."
