DA may set pork price cap by March

The Department of Agriculture (DA) is considering imposing a maximum suggested retail price (MSRP) on pork as early as March, pending the results of a market study.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. stated that the DA aims to set a fair price for all members of the hog industry.

The DA is currently evaluating initial findings from an ongoing study of pork prices.

Current retail prices for fresh liempo range from P380 to P480 per kilo, while kasim sells for P350 to P420 per kilo.

Frozen liempo averages P311.33 per kilo, and frozen kasim averages P253.56 per kilo.

Secretary Laurel has attributed high pork prices to middlemen, high gasoline prices, slaughterhouse fees, and farmgate costs.

The full MSRP study is expected to be completed by the end of February.
