COVID-19 cases rise amid Omicron subvariant fears

COVID-19 infections in the Philippines are on the rise again, with cases increasing from May 19 to May 22, although there was a slight dip on Sunday, May 22.

Daily case counts recorded were 103 on May 18, 195 on May 19, 214 on May 20, 246 on May 21, and 191 on May 22.

Experts warn of a potential COVID-19 surge due to the Omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.2.12.1, the latter having 17 recorded cases with local transmission confirmed.

Dr. John Wong of Epimetrics noted an uptick in cases and stated that the surge's level, compared to the January Omicron peak, depends on the variant, vaccination levels, behavior, ventilation, and weather.

He further explained that subvariants are more transmissible, vaccination levels are only slightly higher than in January, and the rainy season may lead to more people gathering indoors.
