Contractor files habeas corpus for release from Senate detention

Contractor Curlee Discaya's legal team has filed a petition for habeas corpus with the Pasay City Regional Trial Court, seeking his immediate release from Senate detention.

Discaya has been detained at the Senate detention facility since September 18 after being cited in contempt by the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee for lying about the absence of his wife during a hearing on anomalous flood control projects.

His lawyer, Atty. Cornelio Samaniego III, stated that the petition aims to compel the Blue Ribbon Committee to justify the legality of Discaya's prolonged detention.

The filing of the habeas corpus petition was prompted by the suspension of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee's investigation and the resulting uncertainty surrounding Discaya's detention.

Earlier, the Bureau of Internal Revenue filed multiple tax complaints against the Discaya couple and a corporate officer over P7.1 billion in tax liabilities, on which the lawyer declined to comment.
