Comelec to highlight empty podiums for debate no-shows

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) stressed the importance of candidates participating in its upcoming televised debates, especially with pandemic restrictions limiting traditional campaigning.

Comelec spokesman James Jimenez stated that an empty podium would send a clear message from candidates who choose to skip the events, and they will "make a big deal" out of any absence.

He emphasized that these debates offer a crucial platform for candidates to present their government plans to the public, a vital opportunity given the scarcity of in-person engagements.

The Comelec will stage the debates starting on the last week of February and continuing through March and April, covering the entire campaign period for the 2022 elections.

The poll body is considering three "massive" venues and is eyeing to conduct the debates in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao to ensure wider reach.

Election watchdogs previously noted that candidates avoiding the debates might reflect negatively on their image, suggesting they could be apprehensive about public scrutiny.

The Fair Election Act does not grant Comelec the authority to compel candidates to attend the debates, leading to public speculation about potential no-shows among presidential and vice presidential aspirants.
