Comelec seeks P27B for BSKE
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is requesting a P27 billion budget for an automated Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) to be held on November 2, 2026.
This requested amount is P15.2 billion more than the P11.8 billion allocated by the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) in the 2026 National Expenditure Program.
Comelec Chair George Garcia stated that the P27 billion is necessary for an automated BSKE, which could significantly speed up vote counting to as little as 30 minutes.
Garcia recalled that in a pilot test in Quezon City and Dasmariñas, Cavite, the winning chairman was identified within an hour.
He also highlighted that automating the BSKE could help reduce election-related violence by expediting the vote counting process, noting that manual vote counting should be ditched.
