Comelec probes 31 contractors over illegal donations to 2022 candidates

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is investigating 31 contractors for potentially making illegal donations to national candidates' campaigns during the 2022 elections.

Comelec Chairman George Garcia stated that these contractors were identified through the candidates' submitted statements of contributions and expenditures.

The investigation aims to determine potential violations of Section 95 of the Omnibus Election Code, which prohibits contractors providing services or goods to the government from engaging in partisan political activity.

Garcia mentioned that election offenses have a five-year prescriptive period, making the 2022 poll offenses subject to investigation until 2027.

While the Comelec is verifying the list of contractors, Garcia previously indicated that at least three or four senators might have received such donations.
