Comelec postpones Shanghai overseas voting due to lockdown

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has postponed the start of overseas voting in Shanghai due to the city's total lockdown resulting from a coronavirus outbreak.

The postponement affects more than 1,600 Filipinos in Shanghai who were expected to vote starting April 10.

Voting in Shanghai will only proceed once the lockdown is lifted.

The Comelec is also considering suspending overseas voting in seven other areas: Baghdad, Iraq; Algeria; Chad; Tunisia; Libya; Islamabad, Afghanistan; and the Ukraine warzone.

A total of 127 registered voters are in these seven areas.

The Comelec is awaiting formal confirmation from the Department of Foreign Affairs-Overseas Voting Secretariat regarding the capacity of these posts to conduct voting.
