Comelec orders probe on Cayetano for alleged false COC declaration

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) First Division has ordered the poll body's Law Department to probe Lino Edgardo Cayetano for alleged misrepresentation in his certificate of candidacy.

The Comelec First Division dismissed a petition to deny due course or cancel Cayetano's certificate of candidacy for the recent midterm polls as "moot and academic" following his failed bid to become representative of Taguig City's first district.

This action does not absolve Cayetano of potential criminal liability.

The investigation is to determine possible violations of the Omnibus Election Code (OEC), specifically for making false declarations in his COC.

The Taguig City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 153 had previously directed the Comelec ERB Taguig City to exclude the names of Cayetano and his wife from the list of official voters of a precinct after they failed to establish the required residency.
